How to Troll a Penguins Fan

The 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs are upon us and the Columbus Blue Jackets are facing the Pittsburgh Penguins in first round competition.  It's no secret that most Penguins fans think their team is the greatest gift God has given the world since joining the NHL in 2005.  But, let's remind some of those bandwagon Penguin fans of the humility the team has had to endure since actually joining the league in 1967.
If we're all honest with ourselves, we know the little girl scores
with MAF trying really had to stop the shot.

- The Penguins filed for Bankruptcy in 1975, after making the playoffs only twice in 8 years.

- OH COME ON! The Penguins filed for Bankruptcy  AGAIN in 1998, after making the playoffs for 8 straight seasons including two Stanley Cup Championships.

- The Pittsburgh Penguins are only one bankruptcy away from a Bankruptcy Hat Trick.

Consol Energy Center was not constructed without it's share of controversy, and as you may have guessed, almost went bankrupt before the first game was ever played.

- The Penguins intentionally tanked the 1983-1984 season in order to draft Mario Lemieux first overall in the 1984 entry draft.

- Not removing Marc-Andre Fleury's balls is likely the only reason the Penguins ever got Sidney Crosby.

- Bankruptcies and shady first round picks that save a franchise.  Anyone else see a trend?

- Marc-Andre Fleury's initials are MAF - also engineer lingo for "Mass Airflow Filter."  Yep, MAF lets a lot of things through...

- The Blue Jackets out drew the Penguins from 2000 to 2007 - while the Penguins finished last in attendance for the 2003-2004 season.

- The Penguins starred in a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie.

- The Penguins let Scotty Bowman walk.  Today, they have the beloved Dan Bylsma.

- The Penguins were worth $101 million dollars in 2005 when the CBJ were worth $135 million dollars.

- The ice conditions at the Consol Energy Center are not the best.  Our guess is the humidity inside the arena is to blame - since most Penguins fans breathe through their mouths...

- Penguins fans struggle with Satire.

- Penguins fans are too stupid to know when they are actually getting trolled.

There you have it.  While Penguins fans point and laugh at us here in Columbus for not having a team as individually skilled as theirs (which is fact and can't be argued), their past is not glorious or glamorous.  They cannot pretend their team hasn't had it's fair share of obstacles to overcome - even if this is the first time they are hearing the Penguins existed before 2005.

The Hustle Boys and the Mystery of the Nationwide Ghost

Welcome to the first installment of DKM Hockey's original mystery series, The Hustle Boys. The idea was hatched during Episode 34 of the podcast as the guys discussed their CBJ super hero choices. A teenage mystery-solving duo in the style of The Hardy Boys and the gang from Scooby-Doo was born, starring Matty Calvert and Cammer Atkinson as The Hustle Boys.

We hope you enjoy this installment of The Hustle Boys. Be sure to listen to Episode 35 of the DKM Hockey podcast to hear how Cammer and Matty solve The Mystery of the Nationwide Ghost.

"Did you feel that, Matty?!" asked Cammer as he laced up his skates in the Nationwide Arena locker room before the game. "There it was again, that cold wind just blew by me! It was really spooky!"

"Stop being such a scaredy-cat, Cammer, it's nothing," replied Matty. "Just your mind playing tricks on you again....like how you swear the locker room is haunted by some evil, stinky swamp monster right before every game."

Overhearing Matty's comment, Cammer's locker neighbor David Savard looked up uncomfortably from his teeming plate of Skyline Chili, his eyes shifting nervously between his teammates and his ritual pregame meal.

Matty and Cammer, along with the rest of the Columbus Blue Jackets, were just getting ready for their home finale against Phoenix. A win would not only bring a strong conclusion to a successful season of hockey at Nationwide Arena, but it would keep the team clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Still, with all the excitement of playoff hockey buzzing around the arena and the Columbus fans, Cammer knew something was amiss...

Be the Fifth Line

We are Columbus, Ohio.

We are the biggest city in this great state, the seventh-largest in the USA. We are the best-kept secret in the Midwest (which, in itself, is the best-kept secret in America). We are home to world-class universities and corporations and arts and culture; vibrant neighborhoods and a rich history. Columbus offers all the amenities of a big city with friendliness and accessibility that cannot be boasted by many its size. We have a vibrant economy and a gorgeous, clean downtown; we have a city that just keeps getting better.

Chin up, Columbus. Quit slouching around like you’re inferior, because you’re not.

Weekend Home Game Schedule: NHL Conspiracy?

The Problem

A few months ago, my dad had an opportunity through his work to score us a foursome of Blue Jackets tickets. My dad is a very casual hockey fan who lives out of town and enjoys coming to a game or two each year; but mostly he looks at it as a reason to take a weekend visit to Columbus. Surveying the home game schedule to select the best option, I noticed that after the first weekend in February (versus Florida), the Jackets would only be in town for one Saturday game the remainder of the season (the first weekend of March, also versus Florida).

This schedule would leave the ice at Nationwide Arena empty for the last six Saturdays in the season! Could this be right?! Was this part of the NHL's greater conspiracy to doom our beloved Blue Jackets with low attendance and [gasp] Tuesday night games?! (The Jackets will enjoy home ice for the last six consecutive Tuesdays of the season.) Or was this simply part of the league's greater overall mission to doom itself entirely? The people who quietly brought you NHL hockey in between fishing and ultimate fighting on Versus give you: crazy difficult games to attend if you work, travel, have a family or are any sort of productive citizen.

DKM Hockey Podcast: Episode 34

Yes folks, this is actually a published Social Station Podcast recorded on March 28th, 2014 vs the Pittsburgh Penguins.  John has gone missing aboard Flight MH370 and it's up to Joe and Morgan to do yet another two man show.  In the first segment the two of them break down the remaining schedule for the Blue Jackets.  In the second segment, Joe and Morgan ponder what some of the CBJ players powers would be if they were super heroes.  Joe hatches the brilliant idea for the "Hustle Boys" series of books featuring Cammer and Matty.  And in the third segment, the boys ponder the loss to the Penguins, gush over spending the evening with former NHL goalie Damian Rhodes, and compare hangover remedies.
